What the Spotlight session is about

Independent Service Heuristics is a rapid, business-friendly approach to discovering flow-oriented boundaries for teams and services, inspired by ideas from Team Topologies.

This three-part Spotlight session provides attendees with a deep understanding of the importance of boundaries for fast flow in modern organizations. Led by Conflux experts, the session explores the relationship between boundaries and fast flow, and provides hands-on exercises for attendees to apply the Independent Service Heuristics in real-life scenarios.

The Spotlight session guides attendees in the use of Independent Service Heuristics, providing both practical insights into current and possible flow boundaries in the organization but also an enhanced capability for using Independent Service Heuristics across the organization in the future. The goal is to provide insights on where you can continue the journey of evolving your organization boundaries.

Who the Spotlight session is for

This session is primarily for members of Enabling teams in your organization who support the discovery of options to evolve the boundaries. People in leadership and management roles can also benefit from the session.

This Spotlight session is aimed at organizations looking to use fast flow as a driver to evolve their organizational boundaries and gain a competitive market advantage. The session is focused on brownfield landscapes, and is designed to support the emergence of new value streams in these environments.

This session can be run in two ways: as an introductory session or as a more extended and in-depth exploration of the techniques over several weeks. In the extended version, we guide and coach your Enabling teams to be able to use the techniques with their peers inside your organization. Discover more in our Engagement model.

What benefits to expect

  • Learn about the different boundary types: user needs, fracture planes, and micro-enterprises.

  • Be able to articulate and explain the different boundary types to others in your organization, and give meaningful examples.

  • Understand how to apply the different boundary types to generate candidate value streams (for your organization’s products or others).

  • Become familiar with the Independent Service Heuristics questions and understand how they can be applied to evaluate candidate value streams.

  • Understand (and be able to articulate to others) that organizations must be constantly evolving and it is this mindset of evolution, decision-making, and evaluation that is important, not the current shape of the organization.

  • Learn how to facilitate an Independent Service Heuristics session within your organization.

Problems that this Spotlight session solves

This Spotlight session addresses the problem of how organizations can effectively use fast flow principles to evolve their boundaries and gain a competitive advantage. By providing the tools which your organization can use to have a deep understanding of the different boundary types and how to apply them, the Independent Service Heuristics help organizations to identify and visualize candidate value streams and make informed decisions about how to set up teams and design software architecture.

The session - and the Independent Service Heuristics themselves - also help organizations to adopt a "never done" mindset, encouraging continuous evolution and experimentation to stay ahead of the competition.

The workshop takes place over three 2-hour sessions, making it easy to schedule in busy calendars across multiple time zones. These sessions can be run in the same week or spread across two or three weeks.

  • Session 1: Why we need boundaries for fast flow, and how to identify those

    • We begin by examining why we need boundaries, and what is their relationship to fast flow.

    • We take a deep dive into understanding the different “lenses” to reason about boundaries: fracture planes, user needs, and micro-entreprises. We establish the relationship with Independent Service Heuristics.

    • We finish session 1 by analyzing fracture planes for one of your use cases. By doing so, you will have actionable insights about your challenges, using fracture planes as a lens.

  • Session 2: The need for boundaries to be analyzed through different lenses

    • We begin by introducing the concept of micro-enterprises and the relationship with fast flow.

    • We take a deep dive into analyzing your use case with the micro-enterprise lens, and what are the implications for fast flow.

    • We then analyze the same use case again, this time through the lens of user needs, generating a different set of insights.

    • We finish session 2 by discussing the different set of insights provided by the different lenses: fracture planes, user needs, and micro-enterprisesentreprises.

  • Session 3: Put Independent Service Heuristics to work, and Q&A

    • We begin by revisiting Independent Service Heuristics, and the relationship with fracture planes, user needs, and micro-entreprises.

    • We take a deep dive into analyzing your use case with Independent Service Heuristics, by combining the knowledge and insights generated in the previous sessions.

    • We then discuss the candidate value streams, and the implications of adopting them in the current landscape.

    • We finish session 3 with Q&A when questions from the previous two sessions will be explored by the attendees and practitioners.

Prerequisites

Attendees will get the most benefit from the workshop by completing the prerequisite activities. The ‘Essential’ activities will only take around 1-2 hours to complete.
