What the workshop is about

Organizations whose activity includes the delivery and operation of software face ever-greater pressure to go fast - to meet the expectations of their customers, and to beat their competitors to market with new products and services. In order to be able to achieve the goal of moving faster, and deliver more value more quickly, organizations will need to organize for fast flow, and adopt a fast-flow operating model.

This Insight session looks at some of the challenges and obstacles of adopting a fast-flow operating model, and considers some of the implications of doing so - not just for your software teams, but for your whole organization.

Who the workshop is for

This workshop is for groups of people leading change - for example, Exec team, C-level, VPs, directors, head of department, transformation office, architects - who need a coherent approach to transformation.

Your leadership groups will understand the implications of organizing for fast flow and acquire a shared mental model that brings coherence and a common language to future discussions within the group. This will help to accelerate your transformation and avoid conflicting initiatives.

What benefits to expect

  • Agreement on what to address, when, and why

  • Shared mental model around fast flow and Team Topologies

  • Common language to shape organizational changes

  • Clarity about the skills, capabilities, and hiring approaches needed for fast flow

  • Increased understanding of the role and patterns of leadership in a fast flow context

Problems that this workshop solves

You are aware that your organization is getting slower at delivering value - at the same time as it is facing ever-greater challenges: start-ups disrupting your market, customers constantly expecting new products and services. You know that you need to change how you work so you can deliver value more quickly, but you’re not sure what actually needs to change. You are not confident that the current skillsets and hiring approach are effective for fast flow.

Schedule: what’s covered and when

The main workshop takes place over a single 3-hour session. There is also a 1-hour preparation session, and a 1-hour follow-up session.

  • Preparation session (1 hour):

    • Prior to the preparation session, we ask you to write a 1-page problem statement that describes the challenges your organization is currently facing. Don’t worry - we provide you with an example and guidance of what we’re looking for!

    • We also ask that you provide us with a copy of your organizational chart, or other details of how your organization is currently structured.

    • We will then use this information (the problem statement and the organizational chart) to create a causal loop diagram that captures our understanding of your organization, its current situation, and the challenges that it is currently facing.

    • Together we then have a 1-hour session where we (Conflux) can sense-check our understanding of your organization and you can provide further context and clarity.

  • Main session (3 hours):

    • We begin by introducing the concept of what it really means to adopt fast flow and Team Topologies.

    • Together we then explore what might be the implications of adopting fast flow at your own organization.

    • After a short break, we continue with a second presentation on how skills paths need to change to meet the challenges of fast flow organizations.

    • We then discuss how your own organization is set up to meet these challenges, and what might need to change.

    • We have another short break, and then finish the session with a hands-on exercise in which we contemplate what your ideal future looks like and explore the steps that you could take right now to begin that journey.

  • Follow-up session (1 hour):

    • The follow-up session is a semi-structured conversation during which we help you to reflect on the learning and insights gained during the main workshop session.

    • We also share our insights from the workshop, and our external perspective of your organization’s current challenges and opportunities.

    • We help you prioritize what the next steps in your transformation journey might be and to clarify what are the next questions that your leadership group should look to explore.

    • It is also an opportunity for you to come back with further questions, to ‘pick the brains’ of Conflux and to sense-check your current approach and thinking.
